Viral memes and tweets of Queen Camilla have been circulating around the internet following the recent royal coronation that has occurred, with both her and her husband Charles, officially being crowned as King and Queen. These tweets have consisted of social media users giving Camilla many titles, including ‘side chick of the century', with political journalist, Ava Santina even referring to her as the ‘ultimate side chick’ on live television. To further add rub salt into the wound, the hashtag ‘camillaisahomewrecker’ shortly began trending on Twitter’.
To give context for those who are not familiar with the term, a side chick is a woman who one dates or is intimately involved with (usually in secret) in addition to having a partner. In more simplistic terms, it is a mistress.
These labels have been given to Camilla due to her history as a ‘royal mistress’ following the messy love triangle between her, Charles and Diana that dates back to the 1970s. Reportedly, the affair between Charles and Camilla began in 1986 despite both of them being in their own respective marriages.
The late princess Diana herself, even stated that Camilla was the ‘third person’ in her marriage, describing it as ‘crowded’ in an infamous interview.
It is unclear whether these titles given to her by social media are coming from a place of insult or praise as there seems to be two conflicting views. The first one, criticising her rise to the throne and being that she should have respected the late Queen’s wishes and upheld her previously well established title as the Queen’s consort instead of ‘trying to promote herself as head of state’ as said by one twitter user.
However, the opposite view appears to be commending her efforts at ‘playing the long game’ and having both the patience and commitment to stand behind the side-lines until it was the right time to ‘swoop in’ and ‘snatch her title’.
